And speaking of Grandma…

I’ve mentioned my grandma before. She was a very special part of my life growing up. She didn’t live too far from our house so we saw her a lot. We had such fun at her house. We could go upstairs and take the sheer curtains she had stored in cupboards and drawers and play dress up. They made wonderful wedding gowns and veils. We would play house and school and the summer days would pass quickly.
The things I remember my grandma making the most were aprons and potholders. I would sometimes help her cut out the materials for the potholders and in the process, I learned how to make them myself. Her aprons were beautiful…always bright colors and some kind of trim. They would have pockets and sometimes the pockets would be hearts. I still have an apron that grandma made and I use it quite frequently…as did my granddaughter, Ashley (pic). Grandma even made them to sell at the store next door.
I wish I had pictures of all the beautiful clothing she made…yes, she was quite a seamstress. And all the practice I had in my teenage years, along with her guidance, made me love to sew. I made school clothes including “hot pants” which some of you will remember being the style. I sewed for birthdays, Christmas and any special event that could require sewing.
And then I became engaged to be married and I decided to make my wedding gown. It was made of velvet material as were the bridesmaid gowns. The bodice was covered in lace and there were at least a dozen buttons and loops on each cuff and many more down the back. Then as each of my sisters married, I made their wedding gowns too.
I really do love to sew and I guess I’ve had lots of practice. I hope a lifetime of needles and threads continues in my family and perhaps the next time I make a wedding gown it will be for one of my granddaughters.
