The Very Beginning

Today I have my new blog page.  I’ve been wanting to blog for quite some time and now it’s a reality thanks to my husband, Jack, who made it for me.

I call my blog A lifetime of needles and threads because I love sewing as did my grandmother before me and hopefully as my granddaughters after me.  Not only could Grandma sew, she could crochet and knit.  I wish I had paid more attention to crocheting but all I ever accomplished was a chain that went on and on.

My mother would knit making us scarves, hats and mittens.  They were very warm but I do recall playing out in th snow with them.  Once they were wet they became very heavy too and then the warmth ended.

001My mother-in-law, known to all the children and grandchildren as Nanny, also knits.  Ever since I’ve known her (which has been 39 years) she has never sat idle but is knitting.  She has made wonderful things over the years….baby hats for the new born babies at the hospitals, sweaters for less fortunate children, dishrags which I love and have a good supply of and much more.

I remember my granddaughter, Ashley, watching Nanny knit and whispering to me…”I can do that.”  And Nanny was a good photo 2teacher.  Before long Ashley (top picture) was knitting away and loving it.  Now with the younger grandchildren there is the same interest.  Ashley’s younger sister, Sienna (in the lower picture with Nanny), also asked Nanny to teach her to knit.  At 92 years old Nanny is still a great teacher.

And so a lifetime of needles and threads continues throughout my family and it ties us all together with some very special memories.
